Is Sexism Obsolete Yet? The Pecking Order!

I was once asked; “What is the most significant thing about you or your life?” I answered instantly that it was that I was born in the United States where we have access to so much more than many places. But really I should have said being born human was the most significant thing in my life and then female and then being born in the USA.

The debate over superiority

There is an ongoing debate over whether there ever was a time when humans of both sexes where considered equal or that the matriarchy actually existed. I find it interesting that there are so many heated debates about this. If it was not an important issue we would not be so polarized.

The pro male superiority view:

Some people laugh and say; “Of course women where never considered equal to men in society. How stupid to think anything else! Look at the evidence.” For these people the idea of women ever having been considered equal to men, much less superior is so upsetting they can’t even look objectively at archaeological or historical evidence that might support this theory.

The pro female superiority view:

Some people laugh and say; “Of course women where always equal to men in society for hundreds of thousands of years up to about 4 thousand years ago. How stupid to think anything else! Look at the evidence.” For these people the idea of men being somehow always superior and in control of human society is so upsetting they can’t even look objectively at archaeological or historical evidence that might support this theory.

Which camp do you fall under and how does this affect your life?

How do you think of yourself and others? Do you feel equal to other people? less than? More than? How do you really, honestly operate in the world? Depending on which sex you are do you excel more or less than you could because of your belief in the natural superiority or inferiority of your gender?

This affects every part of all of our lives and we don’t even know it because we are living in the midst of it.

The damage is hidden

There is a constant back lash toward women

We hardly need to mention the hatred and ridicule of women in most cultures on this planet. The movies, the visuals and the stories conveying how stupid and inferior females are seem to be endless. Women’s sexuality is constantly under attack. If they want lots of sex they are considered “nymphomaniacal” (I like making up new words) and have some type of mental health issue causing all this sexual desire. In some cultures the genitals are even cut off to keep women form getting too sexual.

On the other hand if women don’t want as much sex as men this is seen as abnormal as well and they are encouraged to buy pills and potions and therapies to correct the issue.

There is a constant back lash toward men

But what about all the negativity toward men? Instead of making men seem wonderful there is constant ridicule of the male gender by both sexes. The male body is constantly made fun of in cartoons and caricatures. Men are considered selfish, childish, insensitive and dense. Popular American culture takes it to a mythic level with characters like Homer Simpson, Archie Bunker and many others.

But then if a male does show emotion or sensitivity people say he is either homosexual, as if this is a terrible fate, or is acting like a “little boy”. All men are “little boys” according to most women of any age or sexual orientation. The machismo must be played up at all times to keep from being like a woman who is just as despised as the male.

Male sexuality is just as brutalized as female sexuality. Men are typically called” dogs” and deemed completely untrustworthy, and unable to be faithful. In “polite society” it is not ok to need sex as much as many men do. Pornography that caters to male sexuality in any way shape or form is seen as disgusting, embarrassing and beneath the dignity of any mature, law abiding person.

Men are generally considered to be stupid. There is even “evidence” about brain structure that shows that they can’t multi-task as well as women. There are of course all the theories about why women have less special sense and math skill than men.

How big are these brain structure differences? If this is such a big indicator of human capability why are there so many good female mathematicians tucked away in little villages in India and why do so many men make good stay-at- home-multitasking dads lately?

The “evidence” for these major differences in abilities reminds me of the early racist “evidence” for smaller cranial capacity for all non-Caucasian humans. It turns out of course, that the researchers we biased, insecure Caucasians who could not accept the idea of equal intelligence for Negro or Asian brains. It turned out that the researchers where simply ignorant and frightened of any one who looked a little different than they did. Also many 18th century American scientists backed these archaic theories because they feared that if slavery and low wages for non whites ended their pocket books would be sorely affected.

Have you honestly never made disparaging remarks about the opposite sex? I know I have. It was simply part of the culture I swam in as a child. I was raised in a radical feminist household where men where derided so hard I started feeling sorry for them. The things that mom and her friends said about men just did not seem very logical after a while. The views where so slanted and so angry they simply seemed ridiculous.

Why do humans need a pecking order any way? That is the big question. Do we really feel so uncomfortable with ourselves that we have to constantly compare ourselves to another group and deride those others as losers?

I am currently researching the evolution of the male image in media messages. It seems all the ads feature super amounts of muscle so maybe the female media buyers are conveying that since we are unable to think on higher levels,…maybe our muscles should just keep getting bigger. LOL
